Rapala Saltwater Sliver

The Best Pound Test Strength For Saltwater Fishing

As I mentioned in the section above, weight is the number one thing to consider when choosing fishing line strength.

Now I am sure you are well aware that not all saltwater fish have the same weight or size; some saltwater fish are small-sized, while others are bigger.

Small size saltwater fish can be handled by low-strength fishing lines, while big size saltwater fish require high-strength fishing lines.

Small-size saltwater fish include sea bass, flounder, and sea trout. They weigh about 8 to 10 pounds on average.

The best line pound test for catching them is the 12 to 14-pound test.

400;”>Red drums, blues, small tuna, and stripers are regarded as medium-size saltwater fish and they weigh between 12 and 20 pounds on average.

The best line pound test strength for landing them is anything between 20-25 lbs.

Big saltwater fish such as sharks, marlins, large kingfish, and large tuna weigh more than 30 pounds on average and hence require more than 30 + pound test fishing lines to catch.

Some saltwater fish can weigh as much as 100 pounds and, therefore, require similarly high pound test fishing lines to catch.

How To Catch A Clam

Unfortunately, the only way to snag Clam Bait is by first catching a Clam. This is much easier said than done, as Clams are hard to come by, even for those with a high alacrity for fishing. Thankfully, there is one surefire way to increase the chances of catching a Clam, although, past that, the only “easy” way to get a Clam is to buy one from the Trading Post. Those looking to snag their own clam will want to use Nightcrawler Bait when fishing near Salt Water areas. This particular bait is loved by Clams and makes it easier to snag one.

Where To Find Nightcrawler Bait

Nightcralwer bait is, thankfully, much easier to grab than Clam Bait. All players need to do is head to a nearby beach and search the shores for Flint. Any time a player snags some Flint on the beach, they have a chance of finding some Nightcrawlers wiggling around underneath it. There is no special mechanic to grabbing the Nightcrawlers themselves, they’ll simply pop up and be added to a player’s inventory whenever they grab some Flint. After scouring the beach for a bit, players should have a healthy amount of both Flint and Nightcrawler bait.

How Fishing Works In New World

Once players have some Nightcrawler bait, they’ll need to actually fish a Clam out of the ocean. To do so, they can head to any beach and simply cast their line into the ocean (players will need a Fishing Rod, which can be grabbed from an early quest or crafted at a Tool Workbench). The default key to “start fishing” is usually F3 on PC but players may need to check their keybindings if that isn’t working.

It’s important to note that Clams can ONLY be caught in Salt Water and will not spawn in Fresh Water. Beaches outlooking the ocean are the easiest places to snag them, to ensure the area is Salt Water. Once players place bait on their rod and toss their line into the water, they’ll need to wait for a bite. The game will alert that a fish is “going to bite the line” prompting near the circle icon that shows up when a line is placed into the ocean. Once the fish is “ready” the line will fill with a green color and quickly drain. Players will need to quickly click during this time to “hook the fish.”

Clicking too early or too late will cause the fish to escape, forcing players to cast out again. Once a fish is hooked, a small mini-game will start in which the player must hold the same button they used to hook the fish in order to reel it in. During this time a “tension meter” will show up in the center of the circle. If tension builds too high (indicated by a red line and the meter touching the outsides of the circle itself) the line will snap and the fish will escape. Players must “let go” of reeling the fish in to let the meter drain once more. It’s a battle of patience, making sure the fish is being reeled in, while not reeling it in too quickly. The larger the fish, the harder it is to keep up with reeling in and giving slack.

SWS Tackle Box

Spinning gear takes untimely spool overruns out of the equation, but tackle for topwaters should be matched to the quarry and situation, and can range from light spinning to medium casting to heavy offshore-ready gear. In all cases, rod length is helpful, and rods should have enough front-end flex to impart action to the lure.

Rods: 7- to 8-foot spinning rods, matched to target species and lure weight

Reels: 3000- and 4000-size spinning reels inshore, 6000- to 10000-size off the beach; 18000-size for tuna

Line: 10- to 100-pound braid matched to conditions; 30- to 40-pound fluoro leaders inshore, up to 175-pound fluoro leader for tuna

Lures: Rapala Skitter Walk, X-Rap Magnum Xplode popper, Doc Plug by Musky Mania, Amegari Dzanga popper, CB One Drifter stickbait, Heddon Saltwater Spook, Super Spook Jr. and Chug’n Spook, Yo-Zuri TopKnock Pencil, Bomber Badonk-A-Donk, MirrOlure Top Dog and D.O.A. PT-7, among others

Weight Wait

Capt. Matt Williams not only fishes Skitter Walks for seatrout, tarpon, striped bass and redfish on his home waters in Savannah, Georgia, but he also uses Skitter Walks with single hooks for salmon in Alaska, where he guides every summer.

“How you set the hook with topwater lures is super important,” he says. “You have to delay your reaction to the strike. I call it a stutter step. The take is so exciting, you want to rip it. Instead, you need to lift, but that lift should be a second behind the actual strike. On the take, fish pull it under the surface, so if you give them a second to do that, then lift the rod and tighten up, your hookup ratio goes way up.”

Capt. Glyn Austin, who fishes in and around Sebastian Inlet on the east coast of central Florida, has his anglers use a walk-the-dog retrieve with Skitter Walks for seatrout, redfish and snook in the Indian River.

“A lot of people, the second they see the hit, have a tendency to jerk the lure away from the fish,” he says.

“I always tell people to wait until they feel the weight of the fish. Don’t reel up, don’t stop and don’t jerk, just keep walking the dog until you feel the weight on it.

“Once you feel the weight on there, you typically don’t even have to set the hook with topwater lures.”

What do you do when a fish goes after your lure but doesn’t get hooked?

“If it’s a jack, you don’t ever stop moving the lure,” Nichols says. “I have stopped it with a trout and had them come and eat it after they struck it, but a snook seems to swim away if it sits still. With redfish, if I miss a strike, I just keep it working. They’re going to try to eat it again.”

Fishing with artificial lures in summer

Anglers use the bait schools to catch fish, even if they do not use the bait itself. Predator species will relate to the schools of bait. Often times, fish can be seen “crashing” the bait, particularly early in the morning before boat traffic increases. The old saying, “find the groceries, find the fish” really applies.

Shallow bars and grass flat edges are prime spots to try, particularly on the high tide. The bait will usually stack up on the up-tide side of the edge or bar. Diving birds are a sure sign that bait is present. Anglers casting spoons, jigs, and shallow diving plugs will produce a variety of fish. Topwater plugs are effective and great fun to fish!

Lure of Topwaters

Mark Nichols of D.O.A. Lures in Stuart, Florida, who started his company with a plastic shrimp imitation, says he was asked “forever and ever” when he was going to make a topwater lure. After years of research and development, he came out with the PT-7.

The PT-7 is one of Capt. Brian Barrera’s favorite lures when fishing around exposed oyster bars in Lower Laguna Madre Bay, on the southern Texas coast.

“When the tide’s just high enough, big schools of mullet feel safe on top of the bars, before the snook, trout and redfish have enough water on the bar to come in after them. They’ll hang right around it, waiting to get in there,” says Barrera of South Padre Island. “Since it’s weedless and it floats, you can cast right on top of the bar. Then on the retrieve, the PT-7 looks like a mullet venturing off the safety of the bar, and the fish come up and explode on it.”

Those explosions, however, scarcely drive popularity compared to other types of lures. Dan Quinn, Rapala’s director of field promotions, says that’s likely because there’s a certain level of skill required to properly present and work a topwater lure effectively. In the case of Rapala’s Skitter Walk, that would be a zigzag, walk-the-dog retrieve, as opposed to simply casting and reeling in a jerkbait or swimbait.

“Some of our most popular lures, you really can’t fish them wrong,” Quinn says. “You can fish a topwater wrong. For that reason, they’re not the bestsellers, but they certainly hold their own, and they definitely account for some of the most exciting fishing and strikes for anyone, from expert to novice.”

What To Consider When Choosing Fishing Line Strength

The number one thing you need to consider when choosing a fishing line strength is the average weight/ size of the fish species you are targeting.

If the fish you are targeting has an average weight of less than 8 pounds, then an 8-pound test or 10-pound test line will be appropriate for landing it.

And if it has a larger average weight, then a larger pound test strength line will be more suitable.

The second thing you need to consider is the aggressiveness of the fish you are targeting. If you are targeting an aggressive fish, you should get a line with a pound test strength of about 1.5X its weight.

For example, for a fast-swimming fish such as a Dorado (average weight of 30 pounds), you should get a 45-pound test line to increase your chances of hooking it up and landing it.

Finding the Fish

In early spring, pre-spawn striped bass are plentiful in New Jersey’s Raritan Bay. “It’s a great fishery for fishing artificials, throwing big lipped plugs and walk-the-dog Spooks,” says Radlof, who uses his bottom machine to mark stripers in 6 to 12 feet and then blind-casts over them. In the fall, when stripers feed on sand eels, Radlof says stripers will sometimes eat a topwater plug all day. Other days, they’ll feed on the surface only in the morning.

Capt. Chris Regan of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, likes his customers to see the fish they’re after, so cooler water temperatures are best for topwaters.

“In the wintertime, when the water is gin-clear, you can sight-cast to schools of 50 to 100 redfish,” he says. “They’re chasing menhaden, and they’re in a feeding frenzy.”

Regan adds that the more noise your plug makes, the better. “We cast past them and fish the outskirts of the school first so you don’t spook them, then work the lure toward them.”

Topwater trout fishing is good from fall into early spring. Regan sticks with the same lures, his proven favorites, even when he fishes different locations.

“In winter, the redfish hug the mud bottoms because they hold heat,” he explains. “For trout, we fish current rips, creek mouths and oyster bars. You read the water to find those nice current rips where the trout are waiting to ambush bait. We’ll walk-the-dog for 15 to 20 feet, then reel the lure straight for 5 feet, then go back to walking the dog.”

That’s how Regan lets the fish tell him how they want the lure, and as soon as they do, his customers are hooked on topwater fishing.

Chumming with live bait is very productive in the summer

While fishing with artificial lures certainly produces for anglers Florida saltwater fishing in summer, many opt to take advantage of the free and productive bait. This requires a cast net and the ability to throw it. Net sizes vary and should be matched to the bait in the area. Large rounded live bait wells and a high-capacity pump will keep the bait frisky all day.

There are a couple of different approaches to catching bait that anglers can use. Before the sun comes up when it is still dark, on cloudy days, or if it is breezy, chumming the bait fish in works best. Yes, anglers chum for the chum! The boat is anchored in a likely spot up tide of a nice grass flat in a foot or two of water. Anglers can use commercial fish food, commercial chum bait, or homemade recipes such as mackerel and wheat bread to lure the fish up behind the boat where they can be captured.

Read this article by Capt Jim on how to catch bait with a cast net

Anglers can also simply look for the bait itself. When conditions are right, which means a flat surface in clear water, the schools of bait fish can be easy to see dimpling on the surface or flashing in the water. When the bait is thick and this happens, it is easy to load the well and a cast or two of the net. Some anglers do this right out on the beaches, where they don’t have to deal with grass in the net.

Once the well is loaded, anglers use this bait as both chum and as fishing bait. The boat is anchored up tide of a likely spot and then a handful or two of live bait fish is tossed out behind the boat. If game fish are around, it won’t take them long to home in on the free bait. Hooked baits are then cast out, and I hookup is sure to ensue. This technique can be used inshore, in the passes and inlets, and offshore over ledges, wrecks, and reefs.

Live shrimp can certainly be used as well. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. Shrimp sometimes get very small that time of year. Also, nuisance fish such as pinfish can become quite irritating as the nibble the legs off of the bait. Finally, shrimp are costly versus the abundant free bait there for the catching.

Best times to saltwater fish in Florida in summer

Mornings are usually the best time to go saltwater fishing in Florida in the summer. The water will be at its coolest point all day. Also, the waters will be undisturbed from boats or other activity, making fish a bit more active and easier to catch. A good approach is to start off at first light casting lures and then when that bite slows switching over to live bait. Days that are cloudy or have some wind will result in the artificial lure bite lasting a bit longer. Conversely, a bright sunny day with no wind can be tough to full fish on lures.

Bait can be easier to catch an hour or two into the morning as well. Sunlight on the water will get the plankton to bloom and will get the bait fish up and moving around. They are much easier to see this time of day dimpling on the surface. As the sun climbs higher, the bait fish can be skittish and more difficult to sneak up on. Many anglers, fishing guides and charter boat captains in particular, prefer to load up the bait well in the morning and be done with.

Fishing in the middle of the day in the summer in Florida can be very tough. The morning the bite is over and it is hot. This is not a bad time to go in for a few hours and cool off and take a nap. There are some situations, such as tarpon fishing, where fishing can be good in the middle of the day. Anglers do need to be careful of the heat and drink plenty of liquids.
